Digital certificate with a key and a seal

Spain runs almost all of its bureaucracy online — and almost none of it will let you in without a digital identity. The certificado digital is free, valid for up to four years, and issued by the FNMT, the national mint. Without it you're back to phone queues and appointment lotteries; with it, most of what used to require a morning off work takes ten minutes at your kitchen table.

If you read nothing else
  • You're only getting one digital IDGet the Certificado DigitalIt covers everything Cl@ve does, plus legally binding signatures. Cl@ve is an add-on, not a substitute.
  • You're an individual with an NIE or TIECertificado de Persona FísicaThe standard individual certificate — the only version most people ever need.
  • You're filing taxes or registering as autónomoYou need it before anything elseSpain's tax portals simply don't work without a certificate or Cl@ve.
  • You're applying through usYou don't need one in advanceSubmission with our electronic signature is included in the packages.

Why it isn't the same as Cl@ve

Spain gives you two ways to prove who you are online, and people mix them up constantly.

Cl@ve is a username-and-SMS-code system. It's accepted for many procedures — checking a status page, booking a slot, a lot of tax paperwork — but not by every portal.

Certificado Digital is an actual cryptographic signature, issued free by the FNMT (Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre) and installed directly in your browser.

If you're filing something with real legal consequences — a residency application, a tax declaration, a self-employment registration — the certificate is the one that works everywhere, and it is what you need to sign documents electronically.

What actually opens up once you have one

Your residency file
  • Submit and renew certain residency applications online through the UGE-CE portal
  • Check the live status of your file with the immigration office
  • Get notified the moment they request an extra document, instead of finding out by post two weeks later
Taxes and self-employment
  • File your IRPF return directly with the Agencia Tributaria — how digital nomad taxes in Spain work is covered separately
  • Register as autónomo and handle your quarterly filings yourself
  • Pull a certificate showing you have no outstanding tax debt
  • Pay administrative fees online
Town hall and social security
  • Book some appointments online instead of by phone
  • Request your padrón certificate and its full history online
  • Check your social security record and manage contributions through Import@ss
Records and paperwork
  • Order a property registry extract, a clean criminal record certificate or your padrón history without showing up in person
  • Apply to have a foreign degree recognised by the relevant Spanish ministry
  • Request a duplicate driving licence through the DGT
Signing things
  • Sign contracts and official documents remotely with full legal standing
  • Use AutoFirma to sign PDFs before uploading them to a government portal

The version you actually need

Certificado de Persona Física — issued to individuals who have their NIE number in Spain (or a TIE card). This is the one that covers everything above, and it's what we set up for our clients.

There's also a Persona Jurídica version for companies, plus a handful of regional certificates that duplicate what the national one already does. Unless you're incorporating a business, start and stay with the standard individual certificate.

How to get it

  1. Apply on the FNMT site with your NIE and passport details — about 10–15 minutes. You get a request code by email.
  2. Verify your identity in person at a tax office or a social security office, at a Spanish consulate if you're abroad, or by FNMT video identification (€2.99 plus tax).
  3. Download and install the certificate, using the same computer and the same user account you applied from.

The certificate itself is free and valid for four years. You can renew it online once, during the 60 days before it expires. After that — or if you got it through video identification — you verify your identity again to get a new one.

Insider tipExport the certificate to a .pfx file and back it up somewhere safe the day you get it. The request code, the download and the installation are all tied to one browser on one machine — lose the file with no backup and you redo the entire process, identity verification included.
Best fit forAnyone living in Spain who plans to file a tax return, register as autónomo or deal with the immigration office more than once. Our clients on Spain digital nomad residence permit packages don't need to generate one in advance — submission with our electronic signature is included.

If you'd like us to handle the certificate along with the rest of the paperwork, book a free consultation and we'll tell you exactly what applies in your case.

Frequently asked questions

If you're only getting one, get the certificate. It covers everything Cl@ve does, plus legally binding signatures. Cl@ve is a convenient add-on, not a substitute.
Yes. Export it and import it wherever you need it. Back it up the day you get it — losing the file with no backup means redoing the whole process.
In practice the certificate is the more reliable option. If you'd rather not sort it out yourself, we submit with our own electronic signature as part of the Digital Nomad packages.
Yes. The FNMT issues the individual certificate at no cost. The only thing you may pay for is FNMT video identification, which costs €2.99 plus tax; verifying in person at an office is free.
Four years for an individual certificate. You can renew it online once, in the 60 days before it expires, as long as it hasn't been revoked. After that single renewal — or if it was issued through video identification — you verify your identity again.
No. The individual certificate is issued against a NIE, TIE or DNI, so the number comes first.
